"Uncle Sam" Young - Model 1902/16
Most of the photographs Uncle Sam Young appears in are from Vermont. Wallace Nutting wrote of "Uncle Sam" Young: "He is a perfect embodiment of the 'Uncle Sam' so often shown in cartoons. The beard on the chin. The shape of nose and fore head, the sturdy figure are perfect. So true is this that he is called 'Uncle Sam' in his neighborhood. But the vest is that his character is as fine as we could ask our 'Uncle Sam' to posses. The sturdiness and tenderness, the transparent honesty, and perfect Independence, the clean history, are all his. The twinkle in his aged eye is a delight to see. He feels strongly his mission in posing for these pictures, and rejoices greatly that he can thus become more than a vague memory. His countenance is now framed on the walls of many luxurious homes. I want people to know how good he is that they may enjoy his pictures to the full. He honestly believes, and so do I, that he came into the world to embody the ideal of 'Uncle Sam'. Without money or price he gives himself to this service whenever desired. For a dozen years now and then he has helped me. A vast deal has been written of artist's models, and sometimes they are pretty and sometimes bad, but this dear soul is the only one of whom I have heard who is a saint and a type of America at its best.

Four photographs that "Uncle Sam" modeled for are:
Uncle Same Taking Leave, studio # 294 Drying Apples, studio # 429
Sunday Afternoon In The Old Home, studio # 1816 His Move, studio # 239

Uncle Sam Young also appears in photographs made at the Iron Works House, Saugus, Massachusetts.
