Private and Confidential

The News in Brief

This picture, which can also be found with the modified title "The Olde Story," is one in a series that Wallace Nutting made in his Southbury, CT home he called, 'Nuttinghame.' In this photograph the woman is standing in her bed chamber reading a letter. An envelope is on the braided rug at her feet. In other photos the woman is seated and reading.

Wallace Nutting wrote about this scene: "The note, read in the retirement of her chamber, by the fair lady in 'Private and Confidential' is no doubt all that the name implies. The fireplaces in the chambers were small - just enough for a bit of a blaze to 'take the chill off.' The bed, a corner of which intrudes, is of the Empire pattern, with the large carved post."

Two other photographs in this series are: "From A Friend" # 159, and a photopgraph, The Jewel Box, which is very similar to 'Private and Confidential.'
