Wallace Nutting Library

The Home Vale - Studio # 6403

This photograph was made in England. Wallace Nutting illustrated it on page 803 of his 1915 Expansible Sales catalog. He also illustrated it on page 29 of his 1928 book, 'England Beautiful', first edition and in his 1927 book, 'Photographic Art Secrets' (plate 101). Both with the title, "Stepping Stones."

Wallace Nutting described this picture as, "A representation of something that does not exist in America. Leading up as these ancient stones -set here, it is said, five hundred years ago,- to a notably fine example of a thatched house, with walled garden, on the farther bank, they afford that sort of a composition which tells a story. One inevitably, perhaps unconsciously, passes along the way pointed out by the picture to the obvious journey's end, - the rest, sweetness and charm to be found at the cottage. It is this play of mind and affection that should be called out by pictures."

Wallace Nutting made several other pictures with a model on these ancient stepping stones. Two that I have been able to identify, "Calling The Geese" # 6458. and "Breakfast Time" # 6385. are very similar with just a repositioning of the model. Another picture with the Model as the focal point is "Ancient Stepping Stones" # 6108.
