Not One Of The Four Hundred - Studio # 2604

This is a very interesting series of photographs. In both his 1912 and 1915 Picture catalogs Wallace Nutting illustrated Not One Of The Four Hundred with the lone sheep light in color and facing right as illustrated above. At some point in time the Nutting Studio colored the lone sheep a darker shade, in my opinion suggesting 'the black sheep of the flock'. Wallace Nutting was a Congregational Minister and titles with a scriptural theme are not uncommon. On this subject Dr. Nutting said, "Any clergyman should, and most of them do, have a tremendous sense of responsibility. The weight of human souls is on their hearts. It is their business to present their flock approved to God. But in what church is there not a black sheep?" Why the Nutting Studio would illustrate this photograph with the lone sheep light in color and sell photographs with a 'black sheep' is interesting. Maybe intentionally? Maybe in error? You can form your own opinion on this one.

On the very same page in the 1912 Picture catalog Wallace Nutting also illustrated a reverse negative of this photograph with the lone sheep still a lighter color and offers it with the title "A Warm Spring Day, # 323".

Other similar pictures that Wallace Nutting made of this flock from slightly different angles are:
The life of the Golden Age, # 321, and
A Warm Spring Day, # 323.
Lambs At Rest, # 1522.
