The Book Settle - Studio # 750

This picture was made inside Wallace Nutting's Southbury, CT home he called, "Nuttinghame." It is illustrated on page 25 of the 1912 Picture Sales catalog and on page 469 of the 1915 Expansible Sales catalog. Nutting also illustrated this picture on page 74 of the second edition Connecticut Beautiful, with the title "The Back Settle."

Wallace Nutting also made a slightly different version of this scene titled, A Nuttinghame Nook, #748.

Wallace Nutting recorded that this Settle was 242 years old when he owned it. He also recorded: "The family who constructed this evidently originated the idea of utilizing the high settle back for a book-shelf. The effect of placing thus against the wall is good. It would hardly answer if the seat were to be drawn up to a fireplace."

In 1912 Wallace Nutting moved his home and photography business to Framingham, Massachusetts. Here he also made several scenes using this Settle. Four that I have been able to confirm that were made in Massachusetts are: "A Musical Reverie" studio #1509, "The Tangled Skein" studio # 1510, "The Settle Nook" studio # 1511, and "A Virginia Reel" studio # 4008.
