The Jewel Box - # 99

The Old Story

Private and Confidential

This picture, copyright 1912, is one in a series that Wallace Nutting made in his Southbury, CT home he called, 'Nuttinghame.' In this photograph the woman is seated in her bed chamber holding a jewel box. An envelope and letter is on the braided rug at her feet. This picture is very close in detail to 'Private and Confidential'.

Wallace Nutting wrote about this scene: "The note, read in the retirement of her chamber, by the fair lady in 'Private and Confidential' is no doubt all that the name implies. The fireplaces in the chambers were small - just enough for a bit of a blaze to 'take the chill off.' The bed, a corner of which intrudes, is of the Empire pattern, with the large carved post."

Two other photographs in this series are: "From A Friend" # 159, and The News In Brief.
