This picture was made in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. The Nutting Studio illustrated this picture in the 1912 Picture Catalog on page 48 and in the 1915 Expansible Picture Catalog on page 18. Wallace Nutting also illustrated this picture in his 1922 book, ‘Vermont Beautiful’ on page 164 of the first edition and on page 144 of the second edition. Wallace Nutting describes the ‘parent’ of the birch trees in this picture as: “ ….a birch monarch measuring ten feet six inches around the bole, five feet from the ground, that is, the waist, where the white ladies of the wood, as well as those of the town, are measured.” “This one,” he writes, “grew on a slope above the road. Some fifty years ago when the road was made, in the old fashion, by plowing, seeds from the parent tree lodged in the furrows on each side of the road. Hence these beautiful children of a beautiful parent."
