Wallace Nutting's "The Pool" is a scene of the landscape in front of his Southbury, Connecticut home he called Nuttinghame. The original master plate was made circa 1905.
Wallace Nutting wrote, "Where this pool now exist, there was a swampy bit of brook with unsightly bushes. The [previous] owner, in order to see across to the distant road, from time to time lopped off the top of the bushes; and the space was possessed by one of the most unsightly swamps imaginable......The erection of a dam just below the dwelling created this dear little pool, in which, as one approached, the homestead was reflected with its fine trees, and became much admired".
Wallace Nutting also made and sold similar pictures of this pool taken at slightly different angles. Those that I have been able to confirm are: "Summer Wind" studio # 295, "Nuttinghame Blossoms" studio #85; "A Connecticut Homestead" studio #346; "The Old Homestead" studio #1130, (Illustrated in his book Connecticut Beautiful, second edition on page 70 with the title "Old Nuttinghame Homestead"); "Shore Lights" studio #2537, and "Along Shore" studio #2707.
Walllace Nutting also illustrated some pictures of this pool in his 1923 book, Connecticut Beautiful. They are: "The Old Wallace Nutting Place" on page 141 of the second edition; "Overbrook" on page 139 of the first edition and on page 123 of the second edition; "Nuttinghame in Spring" on page 284 of the first edition, and "An Ancient Road" on page 241 of the second edition.
As you can see, because this pool was literally just outside his front door, Wallace Nutting took several pictures in this area.
