Historian John Townsend, III, elaborates a bit more on the death of John Nutting, Sr. According to Mr. Townsend, "John Nutting owned about seventeen acres in Groton next to the meeting house and he also owned more land in Pepperell and (Baddycook). He, [John Nutting] was killed by Indians during a raid against Groton and his head was severed and put on a pole by the Indians to discourage others from settling in the area." This was the beginning of the Nutting family in America.

According to Peter Wells, historian on the Fifield family, Eliza[beth] S. Fifield, was 8th generation Fifield. Her father, John Fifield settled in Manchester, Maine, from New Hampshire circa 1831. Mr. Wells said John Fifield's marriage to Margaret Hall is recorded in New Hampshire vital records, and the 1850 census indicates the first two of their four children were born in New Hampshire. In the 1860 census John Fifield is living in Augusta, Maine, with his wife Margaret Hall and son, Joseph S. Fifield. Joseph S. Fifield

In 1865 after the death of Wallace Nutting's father, and when the house he built burned, Wallace's mother moved the family north to live with her brother, Joseph S. Fifield, ("Uncle Joe"), who by now had his own farm in Industry, Maine.
Dale P. Clark, author of, "The Settlers Series - The Fifield Family" writes that in 1868 Joseph S. Fifield purchased the large 300 acre Colomy farm on Puddledock Road in Manchester, Maine. Wallace Nutting lived there until February 27, 1870 when "Uncle Joe" married Lucy J. Knowles. Wallace Nutting writes, "...mother and I put our immediate belongings on my sled... we went down to the next house to live with my Aunt Sarah. Not a word was said between my mother and her brother. It was a good example of laconic country customs. It was the proper thing." Wallace Nutting lived on this farm with Aunt Sarah, Uncle Hubbard and cousin Mamie, until circa 1873.
