The Signature Logo

The script style signature logo that appears above is the easily recognizable trademark signature that most people associate with Wallace Nutting pictures. Photographs made at the height of the Nutting Studio business, from around 1917 to the mid 1920's, will bear this style of signature.

Script Furniture Brand used between 1922 and 1924

The same flair style signature logo was used to brand furniture made between 1922 and 1924, that period when Wallace Nutting didn't own the picture and furniture businesses. It is more of a glamorous adaptation of Wallace Nutting's signature than a true replica.

Wallace Nutting's Signature Wallace Nutting's career spanned several decades so it would reasonably be expected that his signature style would change to some degree. Seasoned collectors have learned to recognize Nuttings signature and will look for pictures he signed. I suspect that in the early years, 1904 to 1910, he signed more pictures than in the latter years of 1911 to 1941. The following dated signatures are a few examples of Wallace Nutting's signature.

Some of the signature styles found on picture mats During the several decades that the Nutting Studio was in operation, several head colorist were authorized to sign Nuttings name to his work. For this reason the signature style will vary depending on when and in what studio the picture was made.

As can be seen from some of the examples displayed above it is not uncommon to find smaller mats with the signature "W Nutting". It is also not uncommon to find miniatures and small mats signed with just the initials "W.N." This is not an absolute list of authorized signatures. Only a small sample.
